Fall 2006 College of the
Sequoias Library Technology Certificate Classes
An introduction to the exciting field of library science, including the philosophy of library service, the history and types of libraries, organization and operation of libraries, and the role of the Library Media Technician. This 3-unit class covers current practices in cataloging,
classification, and processing of library materials. The Dewey Decimal System and Sears Subject headings will be
emphasized, but Library of Congress systems will also be discussed. Filing
rules and book repair will also be covered.
Spring 2007 College of the
Sequoias Library Technology Certificate Classes
This 2-unit class covers an introduction to the publishing industry, the principles of collection development, bibliographic searching, accounting and budgeting, an overview of ordering, receiving, and claiming procedures, and weeding the library collection. This 3-unit class covers practical use of books and media
in library media centers, booktalking, storytelling, reading incentives,
curricular tie-ins, and collaboration with teachers.
Fall 2007 College of the
Sequoias Library Technology Certificate Classes
This 2-unit class provides an overview of a wide variety
of media within a library including the Internet, compact disc,
telecommunications, video, and hypermedia.
In addition, intellectual freedom, censorship, privacy, and copyright
issues as they apply to media will be presented.
This 3-unit class covers library circulation systems,
standard print and computer reference skills, costumer service skills
(including handling problem patrons), bibliographic skills, interlibrary loan
procedures, supervision of pages and volunteers, and library promotion. Click here for tentative syllabus and assignment sheet.
