Course Objectives:
After completing this course, students will be able to
1. Promote books and other library resources to children.
2. Advise students in their selection of reading materials.
3. Suggest materials to teachers and parents to enhance the children’s interests or studies.
4. Collaborate with teachers to create resource rich lessons making full use of the library media center.
5. Use the Big 6 research skills to promote information literacy in students.
6. Storytell and booktalk to groups of students.
Teaching methods:
Discussion in small groups, lecture, directed experience.
Library 204 will cover Children’s and School library services. Emphasis will be on the practical use of books and media in library media centers, booktalking, storytelling techniques, reading incentive programs, and children’s literature. Students will learn about connecting library resources to the curriculum and collaborating with teachers to create resource rich lessons.
Grading:
Students will be graded on the basis of their class attendance and participation, their written reports, their oral reports, and their final exam.
Examinations:
There will be a one hour final exam on the last day of class.
Attendance:
Students are required to attend all classes.
Note: Cheating or plagiarism will be dealt with according to the Student Code of Conduct, which includes consequences ranging from reprimand to expulsion.
Assignments
Before you all panic, please note: All of these assignments will be worked on in class. Most are group assignments to do together. You learn like all students do, by creating and teaching. We are here to guide you when necessary. All assignments should be handed in on the last day of the class.
Assignments
Booktalking - Informal Oral Presentation
Objectives:
· Gain experience presenting in public
· Learn and practice Booktalking
· Learn about new books
Procedure:
Pick your favorite book and give a booktalk to a small group of 4-6 people.
Objectives:
· Gain experience presenting in front of groups
· Create new ways to present old ideas
· Learn from other’s presentations
Procedure:
Pick a library skill and present how to teach it to a certain age group.
Examples:
· Care of Books
· Parts of a Book
· Shelving/ using shelving place holders
· OPAC use
· Database use
· Deciding on a topic
· Finding Resources
· Notetaking/use of information
· Listing References
Class time will be given to prepare this presentation
Objectives:
Gain experience in presenting to groups
Learn stories that you can use in presentations
Experience many different styles of programming for children
Procedure:
Select from the list below and give an oral presentation of no longer than five minutes.
· Storytelling (traditional and/or audience participation)
· Storytelling (with props/aids)
o Flannel board
o Vinyl board
o Drawing
o String
o Etc.
· Puppetry
· Fingerplays
Your presentation should be no longer than five minutes.
Notes: Reading a book will not fulfill this assignment. Please practice in front of a mirror or with family members or with classmates (class time will be given).
Observation/volunteer.
Objectives:
· Learn about other libraries’ procedures
· Observe other librarians at work
· Network in the world of libraries
Procedure:
Spend at least three hours in a library other than your own, working with and observing services to children. Help the librarian (your classmate?) in the delivery of these services. Write a one-page report describing your experiences, what you did, what you could have done better, and what you would like to do more of.
Standards-based Bulletin Board (may be done in groups of 2 or 3.)
Assignment: Create a bulletin board using die-cuts and other things from the Teacher’s Resource Center or from the Visalia Unified Teacher’s Center based on a K-12 content standard. Identify the standard by number and title, and make this a portable bulletin board that can be used more than once.
Objectives:
· Learn to collaborate in planning lessons with a teacher
· Gain the support of a teacher on your staff
Procedure:
Pick your favorite teacher at your site and tell her that you have an assignment to gather materials for her to use in one of her lessons or units. With the teacher, choose an upcoming lesson and select materials from your library, the public library, ERS, and anywhere else you may think of. Write a one-page report showing the grade and lesson selected, a list of the resources, and your evaluation of this project.
If you are not working in a school library, you may prepare a display that includes materials on a particular subject for children for a public library, or you can work with a classmate.

· Continue processing manual started in other classes
· Condense and review this class
Procedure:
Create/add to your Procedures Manual. It should include:
· Class visit scheduling
· Programming guidelines
· Other procedures related to classes and individual children
