Course
Objectives:
Upon
completion of this course, the students will be able to:
Explain
the major Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress divisions.
Accurately
catalog and file new materials.
Determine
whether a library item can be repaired or must be discarded.
Access
and use online cataloging resources.
Manage and circulate serials.
Teaching
methods:
Discussion
in small groups, lecture, directed experience.
LIBR 203 will challenge the student to think in new ways about library organization, whether or not he or she is now working in a library. Students will participate in small group discussions on topics suggested by readings and by instructor lectures and present their views to the class. The computer lab will be used to access Internet information about cataloging and processing materials. Students will gain hands-on experience both in class and in their homework assignments.
Grading:
Students
will be graded on the basis of their class attendance and participation,
their written reports, their oral reports, and (mainly) their final exam.
Examinations:
There
will be a two hour final exam.
Attendance:
Students
are required to attend all classes.
Final
withdrawal date:
Two
weeks after the first class meeting
is the final day to withdraw. It is the student’s responsibility to
fill out and turn in the correct form or forms to drop the class.
Note: Cheating or plagiarism will be dealt with according to the Student Code of Conduct, which includes consequences ranging from reprimand to expulsion.

I.
Dewey Decimal Creative Project
Objective: Introduce class
to Dewey decimal major classifications
Demonstrate a teaching
method that you can use with students
Add class ideas to your
“idea bag”
Procedure: You will be assigned with 2 of your classmates to creatively communicate two of the DDC major classifications. You may present in any creative way that you choose. Please make copies of any written work to share with the class.
Timeline: Your group will be
assigned at the August 27 class, and the presentation will be made on October 1
II.
Re-cataloging Project
Objective: Students will
learn to recognize cataloging problems
Students will “clean up”
their own shelves
Procedure: Find 5 items in
your collection or another that are incorrectly catalogued. Recatalog and
provide explanation of your change. A short description of each problem and its
solution should be written, all five on one page or less.
Note: do not include all of only one type of book, such as E books that
should be fiction. Look in all
areas of the library. Students without libraries can use a classmate’s
collection, or they may take notes in any public library (but do not remove or
ask for recataloging of books)
Timeline: Due October 1 for
presentation and class discussion.
III. Processing section of your procedure manual

IV. Cataloging final
Procedure: Singly
